Artist’s statement
Gerald Vaandering works with images and ideas that explore what seems to be at the heart and soul of what drives the culture he lives in. Imploring and seducing by way of image and concept his work is always questioning.
Culture is highly dependent on the economy. It is the very influence that makes culture happen. It strongly coerces why culture happens and how it becomes what it is. We are all complicit in the process, by the choices we make and the interactions we have with it. We may have purest ideals of how culture is shaped but the fact remains and more than we would like to admit, it is economics that still has the power to shape and control. If this is true do we have the fortitude to proceed responsibly with a world view that respects the nature of our created being by not being seduced by the Sirens’ of a culture bent on the praise of affluence as the intended endgame.
